Modern soft caps convertibles often have glass windows glued to the fabric, vinyl or other soft plastic strip with a molten rather than a window transparent vinyl been sewn material. If the glass comes off sometimes due to the canvas reduction negligence or otherwise – that can be very difficult to reconnect.

Tape double-sided foam tape like 3M VHB (what an author uses, others might be fine too) can reconnect, but must be applied in a specific way to avoid the constant tension that their bond is broken.

Steps

• Replace the material canopy (“canvas”) to the glass when only a part of the fabric has been separated so that the glass does not have to be re-centered within the hole in the fabric. If it has to be re-focused you could do that by measuring distances with network thawing as a guide and in any case, holding the glass in place temporarily with the gaffer tape or other adhesive.
• Open the lid a little so they do not tense. Prop something such as a small empty box between the front edge of the top and the top edge of the windscreen frame so that the top remains slightly open.
• Find the seal was attached but has become untethered, as the lower edge of the outer layer of canvas. If dirt has accumulated in the bag has been exposed to the weather you may want to suck any particles large.
• If only a very small part has been separated left alone. If a large portion is separated mostly you may want to completely separate to reseal as a continuous piece.
• Clean the contact surfaces with alcohol.
• Close the roof completely to see where the canvas drops on the glass when pulled gently flat with most on the glass as possible, but not pulled hard. At least in the case of cotton fabric, this will probably not as high as originally on the glass (or a connection through even within the layer), as have declined since new.
• Open the ceiling a little and hold back.
• Apply a strip of foam tape double-sided, as 3M VHB ( “very high bond”) – foam to conform to irregularities, so that preferably black ultraviolet rays will not immediately destroy its exposed edge – to the glass with the edge up to the point previously determined.
• Bring the middle of the zone being connected (such as the center, left, right – against; rational of the lower outer fabric). To the edge of the tape should have some slack because it has to be thrown away but basically smooth not tense when the hood is closed.
• Attach the canvas to the tape, working outward. The reason to work outward from a central point it is so that any “excess” material does not accumulate on one side.
• Replace the glass rear window of a convertible car top.
• The hood must be fixed.

Tips

• It may be better to get the top set on a path whose possible failure to someone else, the a dealer assume responsibility. But this is a great alternative to replacing the top.
