Auto glass replacement

Many people are able to make an auto glass replacement on your own, but do not even think of doing it themselves, if you have insurance that will pay for replacement, great, but if you do can save some money by doing it yourself. In short, all you need are some basic hand tools and a little patience and common sense. Having a factory service manual or a subscription certainly comes in handy, too. Having the right information that is specific to your vehicle can save a lot of head scratching and possibly some unnecessary work or even broken pieces!

There are different procedures to follow if you are working in a fixed window frame with a fixed glass without a frame or a popup window. Here we will try a fixed glass with a frame. This type of auto glass replacement is usually simpler because it does not have to mess with nasty chemicals and adhesives.

The first thing to do is figure out which parts of the car have to be removed in order to reach the screws holding the window frame for the car. This is where the factory service information can actually save some time, and at first glance may not be clear that fasteners are or how the glass frames is attached to the car. In most cases you can eliminate everything you need with manuals just basic tools such as screwdrivers, pliers, a set of tubes and/or system wrench. If the glass is fixed on a door (such as a ventilation window or quarter window), a cheap set of nylon or plastic tools really useful lever and makes it easier to remove the door panel without damage. If the car has manual windows, there is a special tool to remove the handle retaining clip, but sometimes you can use a cloth wrapped around the handle to display the clip release.

Once you have achieved everything that was needed removed to expose the screws of windows, it is just a matter of unscrewing the old broken glass. As you all apart, use a vacuum cleaner to clean up broken glass from inside the door panel or inside the vehicle. If replacement glass does not come with a new label, closely inspect the old seal from damage. It may be advisable to replace the board, while you’re at it, even if the old one looks good.

Now it is only a matter of screwing in the new glass and put everything back together. See how easy that was? Most of the time, the fixed glass with a frame is fairly easy to replace, but as I said earlier, a factory service manual can really help you out if it is not obvious how the glass out. For several years, I worked in a car repair workshop using All Data, and highly recommend it. Yes, there were times when I wished I had the manual factory for a car that we were working, but All Data mostly served us well, and since I left the business repairing cars that have subscribed for several of our older vehicles.

In any case, that’s the basic procedure for auto glass replacement when it is fixed to a frame window. Replacing windows of cars that have a frame really is not very difficult and usually can be done with only a basic set of hand tools and no special knowledge or skills. If you have no insurance to cover repairs, you should really think about doing replacing car windows yourself.
